MCA Denver 2021 Parade of the People + CIRC March for Citizenship

On September 25th, I performed “BBQ and the Yellow Balloon” – a social performance for the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver 2021 Parade of the People in conjunction with giving a speech at the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition‘s March for Citizenship event. I felt honored to be a part of the MCA parade in collaboration with CIRC’s historic march to help advocate for immigration reform as an active DACA recipient following the recent reconciliation bill.

Title: “BBQ and the Yellow Balloon”

BBQ was born from Covid into the machinations of the flesh world. She is a messenger, a medium, a symbol of bouncing back, resilience, perseverance, second chances, and redemption. Her proclamation is it’s never too late.

For the 2021 MCA Parade, BBQ will perform a human body float. Her body float consist of her traditional Mongolian uniform in yellow face and white hair holding yellow helium balloons. The balloon acts like a flag or sentient being. BBQ’s human float is inspired by and pays homage to Albert Lamorisse classic film “The Red Balloon”.

BBQ’s social performance is an anti-rally against Yellowism. Her float aims to advocate against the recent upsurge in asian hate crimes and to dispel the hateful rhetorics surrounding immigrants presented to us by the government and media. BBQ’s float seeks to challenge the notions that keep and empower marginalized people in the margins.

In the sum of our struggles, sacrifices, and defiance as immigrants – home remains inside, freedom in mind and inside – the resilience of the human spirit. BBQ’s performance aims to honor the immigrant heritage undercurrent that is our America and to commemorate the AAPI community. Her performance is a call for coexistence, for an ideal world in which individuals can unite in celebration of our distinctions and of our common humanity.

Denver, CO – On September 25th, community leaders and advocates across Colorado will lead a historic march through Denver to demand that Congress and the Biden Administration acts to create a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants and to demand all elected leaders work for justice for all the nation’s immigrants and refugees. While Democratic lawmakers are fighting to include a pathway to citizenship in the Senate budget reconciliation bill, thousands of refugees and asylees from Haiti, Afghanistan, Central America, and the rest of the world continue to seek safety in the United States. The Biden Administration continues their legally dubious and heartless policies at the border under Title 42 and has ramped up dangerous detention and deportation for those seeking safety. The march comes at a critical time to demand action.
